Worship at St. John's

Our regular Sunday worship services are:

  » 9:00 AM (Afrikaans)
  » 10:30 AM (English)

Worship is the heart of the church's life.
The church lives to praise God.
We have no higher calling
than to offer the worship that belongs to God
day by day, Sunday by Sunday.

(Living Faith 7.3.1)

Worship is structured and orderly. While there are many variations possible, the basic structure is:

» We Gather in God's Name
  » We Proclaim God's Word
» We Give Thanks to God
» We Go Out in God's Name

Seasons of the Church Year

The Church Year is Christological. It tells time by celebrating the events of Jesus' birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension and the gift of the Holy Spirit. There are two cycles: the Christmas Cycle and the Easter Cycle.

The Christmas Cycle is composed of the seasons of

  » Advent
  » Christmas
  » Epiphany

Advent begins 4 Sundays before Christmas. Epiphany begins 12 days after Christmas (on January 6) and continues until Lent (this may vary from 5 to 9 Sundays).

The Easter Cycle is the oldest of the two church cycles. It is composed of the seasons of

  » Lent
  » Easter
  » Pentecost

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday 40 days before Easter and has 6 Sundays. Easter includes Easter Sunday and the 6 Sundays after Easter. Pentecost is on the Sunday 50 days after Easter. The Sundays following Pentecost Sunday are called the Season after Pentecost or Ordinary Time.
